Celebrating 20 years of the Support for Cancer Clinical Trials Program

For 20 years, the Support for Cancer Clinical Trials (SCCT) program has been a core part of Cancer Australia’s work to strengthen cancer research nationally.

Through SCCT, Cancer Australia has provided around $150 million to investigator-initiated, industry-independent clinical trial protocol and concept development, bolstering research into areas of unmet and emerging need where there is limited commercial interest. The SCCT program values and supports the people, networks and infrastructure that underpin Australia’s Multi-site Collaborative Cancer Clinical Trials Groups, helping sustain and grow a strong national system that enables high-quality trials across all cancers and stages of the care continuum.

By increasing access to cancer clinical trials, the program aims to ensure more Australians can participate, regardless of who they are or where they live, contributing to improved cancer prevention, treatment and care.

Cancer Australia continues to strengthen and adapt the SCCT program so it remains responsive, innovative and nationally impactful, while also connecting Australia’s cancer trials with global research efforts. Over the next 3 years, an additional $3 million will be invested to support all 14 Collaborative Cancer Clinical Trials Groups to set a shared foundation for incorporating genomics into future cancer clinical trial protocols, driving early implementation of the National Framework for Genomics in Cancer Control
