Overview
The Data Framework aims to ensure Australia has a mature cancer data ecosystem that supports reporting and benchmarking of key cancer control performance indicators, embeds Indigenous Data Sovereignty, underpins data-driven improvements to patient care and supports world-class research.
The Data Framework achieves a 2-year action under the Australian Cancer Plan’s Strong and Dynamic Foundations Strategic Objective to improve accessibility, consistency and comprehensiveness of integrated data assets.
Developed by Cancer Australia in partnership with Cancer Council Australia and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the Data Framework has been informed by extensive sector consultation and reflects broad national agreement on priorities for action.
Framework Structure
The Data Framework is made up of three strategic objectives to support improvements to cancer data nationally:
- Strategic Objective 1: A mature performance reporting system
- Strategic Objective 2: A sustainable and fit-for-purpose data system
- Strategic Objective 3: User-centred, integrated and accessible data
Implementation priorities sit under each strategic objective to guide where action is required. The Data Framework includes an Implementation Roadmap, which outlines short- and long-term priorities that will require a whole-of-sector effort.
Consultation
We asked
For input and advice from stakeholders across a range of settings, including:
- advisory groups and committees
- stakeholder roundtables, including First Nations and Priority Population groups
- individual interviews
- bilateral discussions with all jurisdictions
- a public consultation process.
You said
Key themes emerged during consultations, including Indigenous Data Sovereignty, building public trust in cancer data usage, timely and high‑quality data capture, equity of access to cancer data and data-informed cancer care, workforce training, and raising community awareness about the role of data in improving outcomes for people affected by cancer.
Stakeholders emphasised the importance of embedding these themes into the Data Framework’s objectives, goals, and actions.
We did
The feedback was integral to shaping the Data Framework. Themes were embedded across goals and actions to ensure alignment with stakeholder priorities.
Cancer Australia would like to thank all stakeholders for their input.
