Supporting GPs

Gynaecological cancers can be difficult to diagnose because many symptoms are non-specific. Symptoms often do not occur until the cancer is advanced.

The Centre is working to raise awareness among general practitioners (GPs) about the symptoms and diagnosis of gynaecological cancers as well as the most appropriate referral and ongoing management of women affected by these cancers.

In early 2008 the Centre commissioned the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) to develop a gplearning activity based on four hypothetical gynaecological cancer case studies. Managing gynaecological malignancies in general practice is now available to general practitioners on the gplearning website www.gplearning.com.au This activity considers the management of women with cervical, ovarian, endometrial and vulval cancers, from initial presentation to their GP through to palliative care, as part of a multidisciplinary team approach.

This focus on improving investigation of symptoms and early diagnosis of gynaecological cancers will improve outcomes for women who are affected by these cancers by ensuring they receive the most appropriate and timely treatment and care.

The activity is expected to remain on the gplearning website until July 2011.
