Cancer Australia, in collaboration with the states and territories, has developed the Cancer Service Networks National Program, (CanNET) to better link regional and metropolitan cancer services. CanNET has improved access to quality, clinically-effective cancer services throughout Australia

The first stage of CanNET was conducted from February 2007 through to December 2009, with Cancer Australia providing seed funding to develop seven cancer service networks (one in each State and the Northern Territory), and to build on the evidence from the UK Managed Clinical Networks using principles derived from the UK networks. The outcomes and achievements of the first stage is documented in the National CanNET Evaluation.

In the 2009/10 Federal Budget the Australia Government made an ongoing commitment to the CanNET projects. Cancer Australia is working with all states and territories to develop ongoing CanNET projects that build on the successes and continues to embed improvements achieved so far.

CanNET involves the Australian, state and territory governments working collaboratively with consumers of cancer services and primary, secondary and tertiary health professionals to improve outcomes through better coordination of existing services.

Several of the ongoing CanNET projects will undertake specific projects aimed at improving access to cancer services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and other population groups that experience poorer cancer outcomes.
