Supporting men with prostate cancer

The Australian Government, through Cancer Australia, has provided funding to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) of $3.9 million over three years (2011–2014), to provide national, evidence-based information, resources and psychosocial support for men affected by prostate cancer and their families.

Cancer Australia has also funded community organisations through the Building Cancer Support Networks, (now the Supporting people with cancer Grant initiative) to engage and support men with prostate cancer and their families. These grants are designed to help improve access to evidence-based information and coordinated sustainable cancer support networks.

Additionally, Cancer Australia is strengthening prostate cancer research and clinical trials in the following ways:

  • In the 2007- 2010 rounds of Cancer Australia’s Priority-driven Collaborative Cancer Research Scheme, funding of $10.4 million was provided for twenty research projects relating to prostate cancer and its treatment. This funding was provided by Cancer Australia and six of its funding partners, including PCFA.  PCFA is also a funding partner in the 2011 and 2012 rounds.
  • Cancer Australia also provides funding to the Australian and New Zealand Urogenital and Prostate Cancer Trials Group to conduct cancer clinical trials for Australian men with prostate and testicular cancers.
